ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Philosophy was established in the year 2004. “Philosophy” is a compound of two Greek elements – “Philo” meaning “loving” and “Sophia” meaning “wisdom”. Philosophy, in short, means the love of wisdom. Philosophy department primarily focuses on this wisdom by answering to the ultimate questions relating to the nature and meaning of life.

The department enables the students achieve the following objectives through classroom discussions, seminars, projects/assignments and periodical examinations:

  • Understand philosophical concepts, theories and policies in a coherent manner.
  • Develop the ability to constructively criticize assumptions and arguments.
  • Be able to evaluate the adequacy and justifiability of philosophical concepts, theories, and policies.
  • Develop the ability to analyse philosophical terms in a clear manner to avoid vagueness and ambiguity.
  • Be able to accept oneself and others with tolerance and understanding.
VISION & MISSION

To cultivate a vibrant community of critical thinkers and ethical leaders who engage deeply with the timeless questions and profound ideas of philosophy, fostering intellectual curiosity, empathy, and a lifelong commitment to learning and self-reflection.

  • Our Philosophy course aims to provide students with a rigorous and comprehensive exploration of philosophical inquiry, spanning diverse traditions, methodologies and contemporary issues.
  • Through a combination of theoretical study, critical analysis, and reflective practice, we seek to cultivate the Intellectual Empowerment, Ethical Awareness, Critical Thinking, Reflective Practice, and Civic Engagement.
  • Inspiring students to apply philosophical insights and ethical principles to real-world issues and challenges, empowering them to become active and informed participants in public discourse and social change.

 

DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES

Philosophy program is offered at 2 levels – Bachelors (B.A) & Masters (M.A) degrees, covering the following areas:

  • M.A. – Indian Philosophy & Logic, Western Philosophy & Logic as well as specialization areas such as Philosophy of Human Rights, Management, Education, Industrial Psychology etc.
  • B.A. – Indian Philosophy, Western Philosophy, Applied Ethics, Symbolic Logic as well as specialization areas such as Philosophy of Education, Social Philosophy etc.

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES
PO1Understanding of the fundamental principles in Philosophy and methods in logical tradition (Indian & Western) and capability of developing ideas based on them.
PO2Inculcate philosophical/logical reasoning.
PO3Prepare and encourage students for research studies in Western and Indian Philosophy and other applied fields.
PO4Provide advanced knowledge on topics in Philosophy, applied philosophy and human values empowering the students to pursue higher degrees at reputed academic institutions.
PO5Inculcate the skill of critical inquiry which is necessary for philosophical discourse in order to generate the creative thoughts objectively.
PO6Proficiency in philosophical investigation, ability to explain theories and identify valid argument.
PO7Equip the students with skilful methodology of philosophy so that they can help themselves to analyse the problem, frame the hypothesis, authenticate reasoning and to get a suggestive or acceptable conclusion.
PO8Prepare students for pursuing research or careers in any area of philosophy and allied fields.
PO9Imbibe effective linguistic and critical communication in both oral and writing and ability to develop and defend a logical original position of an argument.
PO10Continue to acquire applicable knowledge and skills appropriate to professional activities and demonstrate highest standards of moral/ethical issues in human society.
PO11Students will be able to have argumentative skills while learning different theories and their criticisms within the field of metaphysics, epistemology, and logic, Philosophy of religion social and political philosophy. The development of this reasoning power in students is the fundamental outcome of learning Philosophy.
PO12Students will attain skills to understand the nature of human mind; they will develop knowledge about learning skills and personality traits of mind as well as levels of consciousness.
PROGRAMME SPECIFIC OUTCOMES:
PSO1Strong foundation on critical thinking and representation of philosophical theories which have strong links and application in day-to-day life particularly practical ethics, tradition, culture, socio- political aspects of philosophy and cognitive sciences.
PSO2Nurture problem solving skills, thinking, creativity through assignments, field work, seminar presentations and project work.
PSO3Assist students in preparing (personal guidance, research papers, and books) for competitive exams e.g., NET-JRF, SLET, etc.
